What is the best VIRUS/TROJAN/SPYWARE/etc. PROTECTOR?

I already have Norton Anti-virus, but it seems to be "expired" so I am not sure if it is still protecting my computer from parasites. And in order to renew the program, I have to pay some amount.. and that is just a no-no.





Therefore, I need a new program; what other programs would you recommend besides Norton? (I have WINDOWS VISTA)
