Can I renew a stay permit if my visa doesn't cover it?

I am an American covered by the visa waiver program. I just found out that I need a visa to cover the amount of days I planned on visiting and I do not have enough time to get it. If I go to Italy and get the required permesso di soggiorno for the 90 days on the waiver program, will I be able to renew it and stay another 90 even though I don't have a long stay visa?|||No, you can't extend your stay this way. Even if this were possible, you would not be able to actually get a permesso di soggiorno within your initial 90 days anyway. The processing times can be extremely long. When I applied for my most recent permesso, the waiting time for the meeting at the commissario for the photos/fingerprints was set for 15 months after I applied.|||If you're travelling on a US passport, you can stay in Italy for 90 days out of every 180 days as a tourist. The 90 day period cannot be extended or renewed, and the Permesso di Soggiorno has nothing to do with this visa.

You could apply for a long-term visa, but this is time-consuming and you will need to show that accommodation has been arranged for the period of your stay, and also prove that you can support yourself financially.

A Permesso di Soggiorno is required if staying in Italy for more than 8 days. Howerver, if you are staying in hotels you will not need to apply for one as the hotel will record your passport details. But if staying with family or friends you will need to visit the local Questura to get the permit.
