I washed my husband's passport and we want to get him a new one. It doesn't expire until 2013. Rather than request a replacement, is there any reason we shouldn't just complete the paperwork for it to be renewed, even though it's "early"? I believe it's the same amount of money for either, so it just seems to make more sense for a renewal.|||The renewal procedure by mail on DS Form-82 [$75] can only be used if the previous passport is undamaged.

To replace a damaged passport you will need to apply with DS Form-11 which requires an additional fee of $25 to be paid to the passport acceptance facility [post office, county court, university].
