Why do passports expire every five years and cost and insane amount of money to renew?

This is from a Canadian perspective, but I don't think things are too different in other countries. In fact, Korea used to have a ten year duration but recently changed to five. Is this all part of America's anti-terrorism changes?|||I believe 5Years is long duration where lot of things change for an Individual like the place of living as such ,so its better for the authority to keep a check and update thenselve in every five years but in My country we have a 10years duration.......|||Adult American passport is good for 10 years but a minor American passport is good for 5 years|||5 years if your under 18 (I think) adult passports are valid for 10 years.|||Government....

That's all I can say.

cjs|||I think American passports are good for 10 years.|||So the government can make more money! Its all about the benjamins, baby|||We can't have it both ways......

Either we're making sure we know who comes in and out of our country......or we care about spending a few bucks every few years.
