How do you renew your U.S. passport and what things do you need to have with you durring this process?

I am 16 and i am going to Japan on this 16th of June 2008 and I need to renew my passport. i already have one from when i was a kid and now i need to renew. My old one is like 10 years old and i figured i would start this process early in case it takes an extended amount of time. I know i need my birth certificate but what i don't know is where to go to even get my passport??? Ijust renewed my passport and I needed new pictures and the old passport and $$ and application|||Just go online to the US State Department for full information.
